Wellbriety Training Programs for Communities
Community Development
Wellbriety Trainings focused on communities include Community Development and Coalitions as Clans. Community Development requires a long term commitment on the part of the community to engage in cultural change that would bring about a healthy and sober community. The Coalitions as Clans training brings together community leaders, Elders, and community agencies together learn how to create a vision for wellness and develop a strategic plan for the community change process.
The Community Development process is based upon the Seven Steps to Systemic Change.
Step 1: Decision to Initiate a Change
Usually this decision is made by community members after a visit from the Sacred Hoop, or after hearing about the Wellbriety Movement and the community development process from Don Coyhis, President of White Bison, Inc. The decision will require a five year commitment to implement the various changes and to follow through with the learning and growth that is required in order for the process to take hold.
Step 2: The Community Readiness Assessment provides the community with the opportunity to identify the best place to initiate the change and what needs to take place in order for the change to be successful. In this process, key individuals representing different sectors of the community are interviewed and provide their own assessment of the issues and concerns of the community. These are compiled and rated, providing a starting point for discussion.
Step 3: 7 Wellbriety Trainings are introduced to the community in a 3 day conference format.
Step 4: A coalition, representing twelve different sectors in the community, is created and the Coalitions as Clans training is conducted to develop the cultural knowledge and skills needed to the coalition a success.
Step 5: The coalition engages in a process to create a vision for a healthier community.
Step 6: A vision book is created. The vision book contains the vision and the strategic plan for creating a healthy community. This vision book is used to document the progress of the coalition and to provide funders and community leaders with information about the purpose and intent of the coalition.
Step 7: Planning and Implementation represent a circular process of planning, implementing, reviewing, and making changes as needed in order to address the many needs that arise in the implementation of the vision. The five year strategic planning model provides an overview of the actions that need to take place.
